4 Tips For a Better Night’s Sleep

Thanks to various reasons, more people than ever before are having trouble hitting the land of Nod. It’s not through lack of trying, oh no, it’s just that when they get into bed and try to drift away, they find that they can’t. And if you’ve ever been in this position, then you’ll know how much it sucks, especially when you need to be up and active the following day. Indeed, it more or less ruins the next day -- you’re annoyed, lack energy, and are, more or less, the worst version of yourself. The good news is that poor sleeping habits can be remedied by a few actions. We take a look at a few of them below, which will set you on the right path.

Set up the Bedroom

Your bedroom should be for sleeping, but so often it is used for other things, such as work or watching television or scrolling through our social media channels. If you’re doing these things and you’re struggling to sleep, then it’s time to make some changes to your bedroom, to make it more comfortable and relaxing. Clear out the clutter, upgrade your bedding, and make sure that it’s loud or bright (such as from outside lights). You’ll find that it’s easier to get to sleep.

Relax Your Body

You’re not going to fall asleep if your body and mind is in a state of alertness, or stressed. It’s much easier to fall asleep if you’re feeling relaxed and good, since there’ll be nothing that’s working to keep you awake. One of the best ways to improve your sleeping habits is to relax your body. You can do this by working with an acupuncturist, or by engaging in yoga or meditation before hitting the hay. A relaxed body and mind are essential, so give it a go if you’ve been feeling the stress in recent times.

Pre-Sleep Routines

You can’t just do whatever you want, decide you want to go to bed, and then instantly fall asleep. You need to prepare yourself for sleeping! If you haven’t been sleeping as well as you’d like, then take a look at your pre-sleep routines, and figure out whether you’re doing anything that might disrupt your ability to rest well. Too much screen time, for instance, has been shown to make it more difficult to fall asleep, since those flashing lights and dinging noises keep your mind in a state of alertness. Put down your smartphone or tablet, and read instead. You’ll also want to avoid those other things that aggravate sleeping, such as drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

Get Consistent

We are creatures of habit, even though we try to resist it. Studies have shown that people who go to bed and rise at the same time each day sleep much better than people who change their time each day. So learn to set a sleeping schedule, and stick to it. It might take a little bit of time, but eventually it’ll become part of who you are.
