If Wellness Stresses You Out, You're Doing It Wrong

When you consider someone who has achieved “wellness,” what kind of images pop to mind? Usually, it is a person who is not only in good shape but has peace of mind too.

Wellness is something that we can all access - but whether we do or not often comes down to the way that we think about it. For some, it is a psychologically pleasant experience, full of rewarding encounters and experiences. They relish the chance to find new ways to make themselves feel healthier and develop as a person.

For others, though, it can be a burden that leads to a variety of potentially dysfunctional behaviors.

Here are some examples of negative self-talk that can make your wellness push more stressful, not less.

  • “I don’t have the willpower to lose weight.”
  • “I didn’t train hard enough when I went to the gym yesterday.”
  • “I will always hate my body.”
  • “I will never enjoy exercise or eating well.”

Telling yourself these things, however, is a surefire way to undermine your wellness efforts and prevent you from ever being your best. Thinking that everything has to be perfect right away, undermines your good intentions. You come to believe that you're a failure if things don't go well immediately. But, as with everything else, wellness takes time, patience, and practice.

Learn To Take Shortcuts

Wellness is a life-long aspiration for most people, but it is okay to take shortcuts when they are available.

How much weight can be lost with liposuction, for instance? It turns out a lot. What’s more, by removing extra fat, it can give you the confidence to go out and work harder towards your goals. Sometimes, it is the push you need to get you on the right track.

The same goes for the food you buy. If you know that going to the grocery store will expose you to junk that you shouldn’t be eating, then skip the store altogether and order fresh produce locally. Keeping the junk out of your home will prevent you from raiding the fridge in a moment of weakness.

Lean Into It

Wellness should never be a cruel master that rids you of happiness. It should always be something that makes your life better.

For that reason, the most successful people often find that it is best to lean into a wellness drive. They make small changes along the way and avoid self-attacking if they slip up. When you take this approach, being well feels more elective than imposed, immediately ridding you of a sense of rebellion of deprivation. Exercising and eating smart should be things that you look forward to - not activities that wreck your day.

When it comes to being well, it almost always comes down to your mindset. If you’re able to make peace with your wellness schedule, then you can’t help but embrace it and make it a part of your life. If you have an adversarial relationship with it, then it can wind up becoming a terrible master, stressing you out.

Nobody can say that they are the final word in wellness. But by taking shortcuts and leaning into it, you can slash your anxiety and improve your life fast.
