With the Coronavirus outbreak now causing mass disruption across the globe, many of us are feeling a little helpless. With no vaccine available to the public yet, washing your hands, and practicing social distancing is all we can do to try and limit the spread. But with cases continuing to rise all over the world some health professionals are estimating that at some time or another approximately 80% of the population will contract the virus, in which case it is our body’s immune systems that are our only line of defense. So here are 5 ways to boost your immune system, to ensure it is fighting fit and ready to tackle whatever Covid-19 throws at it.

  1. Eat proper nutritious food
We’ve all known that easily healthy is important, but now more than ever we need to ensure that we are giving our bodies the nutrients they need to stay strong and healthy. If you can, try to follow a diet rich in antioxidants which involves eating a good variety of fruits and vegetables including kale, broccoli, spinach, strawberries, blueberries, and grapefruit. Include healthy fats, such as oily fish and flaxseed, over saturated fats found in processed meats and dairy, and drink plenty of water to ensure that your cells can function properly.
  2. Get enough sleep
One of the easiest things you can do to boost your immunity is to ensure that you are getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night. Sleep is a vital part of the body’s repair cycle and without it, you leave yourself vulnerable to disease and infection. If you are currently self-isolating then be sure to stick to a proper sleep schedule to allow your body time to recuperate.
  3. Give up smoking
If ever there was a time to give up smoking, it’s now. Covid-19 is particularly hard on the respiratory system, ultimately leading to pneumonia which can cause death. Smoking damages the lungs making them weaker and more susceptible to pneumonia, whilst also weakening the immune system. Try to give up smoking completely or switch to vaping and use a safe e-liquid from stores such as The Vape Mall.
  4. Exercise, even if you’re indoors
Exercising moderately has been found to mobilize immune cells helping to ward off viral infections. Even if you are inside, there are still exercises that you can do such as yoga or HIIT which don’t require too much space or any equipment. Exercising also releases mood-boosting hormones which will make you feel happier and is a great way to burn off some extra energy.
  5. Try to stay calm
Although current affairs may be scary right now, it’s important to try and remain calm. Panic helps no-one and increased levels of stress hormones in your system can actually weaken your immune system making you more susceptible to illness. So take a deep breath, follow government guidelines and stay calm.
These are just 5 ways to help boost your immune system, but remember, washing your hands and maintaining good hygiene will also play a significant factor in warding off illness.
