Getting That Good Gut Feeling

(Collaborative Content)

If you are keen to look after your bodily health, you need to focus on a number of different areas of the body to do so. One of the most important, and one which people often overlook, is your gut - or in other words, your entire digestive system. Gut health is very important indeed; in her recent critically-acclaimed book ‘Gut’, the scholar Giulia Enders said of the gut that it is as important as our brain or heart, yet it is so misunderstood and often even actively abused that it is something most of us could do with looking into in a little more detail. Your gut is a complex system, much of which we don’t have the space to go into now. But what we can discuss here is some of the basic things you can do to improve your gut health, and so improve your overall health.

Probiotics

You might well take probiotics already, or at least the chances are good that you have done so in the past, even if that was in the form of a natural yoghurt. But purposefully taking probiotic supplements is a great way to keep your gut levels balanced, and what’s more it is something that you can do very easily too. If you do want to do this, bear in mind that pills are generally better than liquid form, as they help the bacteria to survive the acidic environment in the stomach. However, no matter how you take your probiotics, as long as you do so you are making a huge difference to your health, and one which you will feel soon enough.

Stress

It’s never much of a surprise when the topic of stress crops up in talk about bodily health. After all, we all know that stress affects pretty much everything in the body, and so the less stress you have in your life, the healthier you are going to be. If you want to keep your gut healthy, one of the first things that any gastroenterologist would recommend is to reduce your stress levels. How you do that depends on your lifestyle and what you have available to you. It might be a simple case of meditating daily, or it could mean taking on less work. Whatever it is, make sure that you are doing it, so that you give your gut a chance to work at its optimum level.

Fasting

Fasting is one of the oldest tricks in the book for overall bodily health, and it should come as no surprise that the gut is one part of the body which is particularly well improved by a period of fasting. One of the main things that fasting does for the gut is that it helps to get the bacteria levels back to how they ideally should be. Fasting is growing in popularity at the moment, and you might well want to get on that bus if you are keen to improve your gut health in general. But make sure that it is right for you first: if you have a history with eating disorders, for instance, this is probably not for you.
